I went to Vinexpo New York
I attended Vinexpo New York from March 4th to the 6th as the show videographer and I’m here to tell you about it. The event took place at The Javitz Center which is an enormous venue and also was my first time there. There were at least 3 other trade events taking place so there were people everywhere. I saw a lot of chefs and hair stylists with really good hair. I couldn’t even find Vinexpo when I walked through the doors and had to ask where it was! Big place.
It was an great time checking out all of the wines and spirits on the show floors, which were separated onto 2 different floors to accommodate the large number of exhibitors. What was cool to see is that all of the booths were ‘European style’ and not ‘pipe and drape’ like a lot of trade events will often have. It had a very upscale look with real solid, well designed structures.
Exhibitors spoke with pride for their region and their grapes as well as the wines they produce. I didn’t know that Australia was known for Shiraz and Argentina was known for their Malbec, but now I do, so I can toss that out at a dinner party! The wine tastings and the way people experience the wine by twirling, sniffing and then maybe some more twirling before finally sipping and studying the nodes or hints of gingerbread, peach, charcoal and other flavorful descriptors. Of course the spitting into the buckets as well.
For my camera I used my Sony a7sii and a couple different Sony lenses. A Sony 16mm-35mm and a 70mm-200mm to be exact. I also brought my Glidecam 2000 with me so was able to get some smooth slow motion shots. Martha Stewart made an appearance to do some business as well as a YouTuber who was also a professional sommelier. I didn’t know what a sommelier was until a few years ago so it was cool to actually meet one.
Such a cool event with people from around the world visiting and exhibiting. Russia, South Africa, South America, Germany, France…truly a world event. I hope to go back next year! To check the show out visit the Vinexpo New York website.
