I Went to Austin

The Running Event

BY Michael Poliskey

I’ve ran a few road races in my time, but am in no way a ‘runner’. The people who go to the Running Event in Austin, Texas are runners. Very cool to see the energy and dedication of everyone there, as well as all the gear and brands that are part of the running lifestyle. Head lamps, sneakers, socks, shirts, glow in the dark everything, and more sneakers, but most of all enthusiastic and knowledgable people part of this close knit running community.

Highlights

The show is pretty amazing with so many products to see, conferences to attend, and late night events. The following video is an unofficial version which just shows some of the better shots I got while at the show using appropriate interview clips to mostly go along with the footage. I had 3 days of footage so not everything is shown here, but if you’re a runner and thinking of going to Austin, then this is the show for you.

The Trailhead

To be honest, I didn’t know who Dave Mackey was, but by the time I left I was googling him to learn more. If you don’t know him or his story, check him out. Dave and his team of runners, friends and filmmakers were debuting a sneak peak of their upcoming film about Dave and his story, which had the crowd at ATRA’s Trailhead Theater full attention. I’ve since seen the film and you can see why their expressions the way they were in the footage here. Pretty crazy story.

The rest of the sessions at the Trailhead were all pretty inspiring and was of the highlights of the show, so I tried to show all Trailhead footage here. I sent a copy of this video to ATRA, the American Trail Running Association to help them promote this years show. I believe they are a content partner to The Running Event.

Stevie Ray Vaughan

This was the one thing I really wanted to see in Austin. The Stevie Ray Vaughan Memorial located at the intersection of Town Lake Hike and Bike Trail. It was only a mile from the convention center! I actually had a 45 minute window between conference sessions on the first day, so I Google Mapped the memorials location and started walking! Had I known about the scooters earlier, I would have downloaded an app and drove the mile in a couple minutes, but no, I walked with my black sweater and Google Map enabled iPhone through Austin to find the memorial and make this quick video. It was a hotter day than I thought so the sweater had to go.

I’m a huge Stevie Ray Vaughan fan, so it was a big deal for me to see and capture this. It was a nice sunny day and made my trip complete! Nobody was hovering around the memorial so I was able to get the shots I wanted without any problem. Stevie was one of the best guitar players ever…if you haven’t listened to him, you should. Check out Texas Flood and go from there. Check out Austin too.
